North African territory, and on the southern edge of the Sahara desert, in the sahel, (Ethiopia, Mali, Chad, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Sudan), the majority of the population in captivity conditions.

It is one of the largest tortoises in the world, it can weigh 220 lb, with its light brown back and darkening towards the margins of the plates, the legs are protected by strong very protruding scales, they feed on plants, flowers of the area and has the peculiarity of storing water.
