It is the largest tortoise in Mesoamerica and can measure up to 65 cm and weigh up to 48 pounds. The carapace color ranges from gray, brownish-gray to olive green, and the plastron is cream, white, or yellow. It is the oldest tortoise that exists, it is considered a living fossil. It feeds mainly on submersible and floating aquatic plants, it most frequently consumes leaves, stems, flowers and fruits of a small herbaceous plant species (Polygonun cetaceum) that grows on the shores of water bodies.
