There are two subspecies: 1) Ara macao cyanoptera: Mesoamerica between Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala, where it is present in regions of Petén (Maya Biosphere Reserve and Laguna del Tigre National Park). 2) Ara macao macao: from Costa Rica to Brazil and Bolivia.

SOME OF ITS CHARACTERISTICS

It is one of the largest of the genus reaching 90.7 cm in length and 2.2 Lb of average weight. It is a diurnal bird and its eating habits are predominantly granivorous, however it also feeds on fruits, insects, nectar, leaves or tree stems. It has a very colorful plumage where scarlet red predominates and yellow to a lesser extent, in the wings a variety of colors such as yellow, green, predominantly intense blue at the ends of the wings.

It is a bird with feathers that is predominantly green, has a yellow forehead, which can extend to the nape. In the wing feathers it has blue and red color. It can weigh 1.05 pounds. Its beak and legs are grayish in color. Their diet is based mainly on fruits, seeds, nuts and berries.
